Performance of Web Service Technologies in a Sensor Application

Web services based on the SOAP protocol are the most widely used technology in the field of Service-Oriented Architectures. They were designed to facilitate communication between heterogeneous systems in a network. Applying hard performance constraints in a Service-Oriented Architecture context is a challenging task because these constraints are often not met by SOAP-based web services. This paper presents an overview on alternative existing web service technologies such as REST, SOAP Fast Infoset, and Fast Web Services. It also provides an analysis on their suitability for a Service-Oriented Architecture. Furthermore, performance tests of different web service technologies are presented.
